I JUST BROKE MY FAVORITE MUG.
MY FAVORITE FUCKING MUG.
MY FAVORITE MUG OF OVER A DECADE.
HOW DO I GO ON NOW?! HOW?!
I just did the math and I’ve owned that coffee cup for at LEAST 11 years. It might be a little more…YEAH.
I remember the day I got it too, clear as day. It was back in high school, my uncle and aunt had taken my brother and I to Six Flags for the very first time for us. It was a really great day together and we had so much fun on the rollercoasters. I loved that trip! I was SO happy… I wanted something to remember it by so we hit the shops and at the time I had begun to build my arsenal of coffee mugs and I didn’t have a Six Flags one yet. So I knew I wanted a mug for sure. I looked around and eventually I laid eyes on that one. It fit so comfortably in my hands, and I loved the colors of it, the details, the weight, the smoothness, the finish, everything about it was perfect to me. So I purchased it with MY own money that I had worked for. The thing about my mug collection is that I don’t own them just to have em. Every single one of them have been carefully and intentionally selected. Many of them have been gifts from my loved ones, others have just called out to my soul for specific reasons at different points in my life. All of them mean something to me and have memories associated with them. At one point I tried to spread the love and use as many of them as possible but that’s a hard thing to do, especially when you don’t live alone therefore you don’t have that much space to keep them all accessible at all times. So I selected a handful of them to keep in the kitchen cabinet and use often and the others have been tucked away. Not forgotten though! I still go in there and will pull some out and put others back. This black and blue mug was my absolute favorite of them all and eventually I exclusively began using it.
Let’s put this all into perspective shall we?
For 11 years of my life I have used the same mug every day. EVERY DAY. For 11 years! Now think of all the possible moments and memories this mug has been apart of… The very first one that comes to mind for me right now is the morning after my best friend had passed. I didn’t want ANYTHING or ANYONE but HIM. I couldn’t eat or drink a single thing. I just laid in my room and cried my eyes out. I didn’t even dare touch my phone because I had a picture of him pulled up that I was staring at the whole time. The only reason I was awake in the morning time was because I had passed the fuck out very early the previous night from crying so damn much. Eventually I was forced to get up by my bladder and from there I mustered the will to just go make myself a cup of coffee. Just one simple cup of coffee was ALL that I could manage to do at that point. I reached for that mug in that moment sooo quickly because seeing it brought me an immediate sense of familiarity and comfort. Which was what I needed most. I sat in my room and slowly drew the warm cup to my lips and took in that first sip of coffee while tears quietly streamed down my cheeks. I studied the mug and for the first time I thought of something other than my freshly deceased pet. I recalled the day I got it and that brought me a sense of peace and shifted the reason I was crying. That memory caused me to think of and cry tenderly over the beautiful happy memories with my dog instead of me crying over just the pain of losing him. From there I was able to slowly but surely pick myself back up, very very little by little at a time… THAT is but just ONE specific moment with that mug…Now let’s look at another…
The very website, shop, blog that you are currently reading this on was built from absolutely NOTHING. I did this entirely on my own, no help from others, no previous knowledge, and no real guidance to be found for this. I learned everything that I needed to in order to make this all happen. A whole hell of a lot of hard work has gone into this endeavor. That mug held the coffee that fueled and comforted me through it all. It was just me, my favorite mug, my music, iPad and a dream at all different hours of the day and night for YEARS.
I’m glad that I at least have several photos of some of these moments throughout the years to look back on. I’m also grateful that I have so many special mugs to now choose a new favorite from. It’s such an old mug I have no idea if I would even be able to find another like it out there. Even if I can it won’t ever be the same, ya know? That mug that was with me through SOOO much shit died today. I haven’t decided yet if I would even want a new one and I think that’s one of those things I’m just gonna leave up to the universe. If it’s meant to be, it will be. The mug will find me again in the right time if it’s meant to and I’ll know then how I feel.
R.I.P My favorite mug 2015-2026
